Twitter Testing Tool That Will Encourage Users To Rethink Their Comments Before They Post Something Stupid
Whenever I have the opportunity to speak with young people about social media, whether it's my students in class or other young kids I know, I always tell them to think before they Tweet.
Now, Twitter wants to think for them.
Twitter is testing a new moderation tool on iOS devices that warns users before they post a reply to a Tweet that the language they are using could be "harmful" language.
"When things get heated, you may say things you don't mean. To let you rethink a reply, we're running a limited experiment on iOS with a prompt that gives you the option to revise your reply," tweeted the official @TwitterSuppport account.
The tool will still allow users to post their comment, but the social network is hoping by flagging offensive Tweets, the user will reconsider posting the comment. Twitter hopes this new tool will help eliminate the vulgar and hateful language users post on the platform.
I agree that vulgar, harmful, racist, offensive, and dangerous language should be condemned on the platform, and considering the situation, maybe the authorities should be notified and the user banned if they are promoting illegal activity.
However, I don't believe Twitter should be the word police and try to convince users what they should or should not post because they have freedom of speech. Plus, it has always been my belief that if someone wants to say something stupid and make themselves look stupid, why should we try to stop them from looking dumb?
If Twitter just lets users expose themselves by posting what they really think, they won't have to worry about them for too long because eventually, they'll embarrass themselves off the platform.
