One of the best things, in my opinion, you could do for your mental health as the coronavirus crisis continues is to turn off cable news.
If you watch a lot of cable news during the day or at night right now, you will be inundated with incorrect models predicting hundreds of thousands of deaths from COVID-19 and heated debates from Democrat and Republican political pundits about the situations occurring in the states.
The rest of the time, they are either singing Trump’s praises or condemning him, which isn’t out of the ordinary programming for the channels. For some of the networks like CNN, anti-Trump programming is their business model.
With most of us still stuck in our homes, why would you want to spend hours of your day being scared by choice by watching cable news?
I spoke to a Trump supporter today that watches Fox; even this person said they’re sick of watching Fox News and hearing all the virus coverage.
My advice is to check the headlines daily because yes, you need to be informed and watch a few minutes of cable news if you must. However, limit your exposure to the cable channels, even the ones you like because if you are already stir crazy, they’ll just drive you completely insane with their constant negative coverage of coronavirus.
Take the time you normally reserve for watching cable news and do something more positive. For example, take a walk, read a book, listen to music, spend time with your family, read my columns, or listen to my podcasts. Almost anything will be better for your mental state than watching hours of doom and gloom on cable news.
